LEI Validator
The LEI validator allows you to check if a Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) is syntactically valid and if it is registered in the Global LEI Foundation (GLEIF) database.
What is an LEI code?
An LEI (Legal Entity Identifier) is a 20-character alphanumeric code that uniquely identifies legal entities participating in financial transactions. The LEI code structure follows the ISO 17442 standard.
Validation Process
The validator performs two types of checks:
- Syntax validation: Checks that the LEI follows the correct format (20 alphanumeric characters) and has a valid checksum according to the ISO 17442 standard.
- Status validation: Verifies the LEI against the GLEIF database to check if it exists and what its current status is.
LEI Code Structure
An LEI code consists of:
- Characters 1-4: Prefix identifying the Local Operating Unit (LOU)
- Characters 5-18: Entity-specific part
- Characters 19-20: Checksum digits
